LegalShield (formally known as Pre-paid Legal Services) was founded in 1972 by Harland Stonecipher after he was sued because of an auto accident, even though he was not at fault.  After spending thousands of dollars in legal fees to defend himself, Mr. Stonecipher knew there had to be a better way for ordinary people to access the legal system.  Thus Pre-paid Legal Services was born.

Pre-Paid Legal began using "network marketing" (multi-level marketing or MLM) in 1983. The company incorporated as Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. in 1976, becoming the first company in the United States to provide pre-paid legal plans for individuals. They went from being traded on the New York Stock Exchange back to a private company in 2011 when it was acquired by MidOcean Partners for $650 Million and subsequently changed its name to LegalShield.

LegalShield corporate headquarters resides in Ada, Oklahoma housing over 700 employees, and has a network of almost 7000 Independent Associates. Richard Kratochvil (MyRightsUSA.com) markets LegalShield memberships to both individuals and businesses and has been a LegalShield member since 2009!
